LesBeehive Throwback Thursday – Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988) & Edward Scissorhands (1990)

This week’s LesBeehive Throwback Thursday is a belated celebration of Tim Burton’s birthday August 25th and the news of the Beetlejuice sequel! Also, time to start celebrating Spooky Season! Truly this is the most wonderful time of the year!

Two of Tim Burton’s most iconic films are also Halloween staples – Beetlejuice is a perfect hilarious fright and presents Burton’s Batman Michael Keaton as a perpetually delighted but frustrated, flustering monster. Edward Scissorhands combines all of Johnny Depp’s sweetness and melancholy and begins the magic Burton & Depp have been making for nearly 25 years. Both films star Winona Ryder as the wide eyed petulant princess that every girl aspired to be from around 1988-1998. I’m still currently working on trying to be as Winona as possible every day!

Lily-Rose Depp is the 15 year old daughter of Johnny Depp and his former wife, French model and singer Vanessa Paradis.  She’s recently gotten on the radar due to her so-on-trend-it-hurts Instagram where she’s doing the 90s redux as perfectly as only a child of two icons from the decade could do.  Last month she attended a special Chanel event to much acclaim from the fashion industry, and in her first fashion editorial, she shows that she’s already perfectly at ease in front of the camera and posed to do big things.

Photographer Annie Leibovitz

American photographer Annie Leibovitz has been a prolific artist since the 1970s, where she first came into public consciousness with her iconic photography for Rolling Stone magazine.  Her use of bold colours and unposed subjects have made her one of our generation’s best portrait photographers – best exampled by her most famous photo, that of John Lennon and Yoko Ono taken just days before his death.  She has photographed everyone from the Queen of England to victims of domestic abuse to Hillary Clinton to countless actors, artists, musicians and political figures.  These are a selection of some of my favorites of her photographs.

Behind the Scenes Pictures by Michael White

Michael White may be the most famous person you’ve never heard of. Playboy, bon vivant and the man who transformed Britain’s cultural scene in the 1970s, his fascinating life story is now the subject of Gracie Otto’s The Last Impresario, a vibrant portrait of the ‘enfant terrible’ of London’s theatre-land.

The theatre and film impresario played a vital role in the industry producing more than 200 shows and films over the last 50 years, including hugely influential successes such as Monty Python’s The Holy Grail and John Waters’ Polyester. Now in his late seventies and still living the party lifestyle, he has a set of friends that reads like a veritable who’s who of A-list celebrities including Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, John Cleese and Naomi Watts who, along with many others of White’s friends, contributed with interviews for the film.

Just as anyone would, White has documented the time spent among friends and shares some of the photos from his personal albums. Photographed by their friend in somewhat casual contexts the otherwise camera-ready celebrities get a chance to relax. The selection, covering three decades, reveals some intimate moments and provoke a sense of nostalgia for photography’s pre-digital analog era. (text from here)
