Fall/Winter Couture 2015 – Alexis Mabille and Stéphane Rolland

Alexis Mabille and Stéphane Rolland have emerged in the recent past to be two of the strongest, most unique names in red carpet ready gowns.  These two collections show exactly why.  Full of dramatic touches like agate belt buckles, corset detailing, bold colours – jewel tones, earthe tones, gold on white, black on gold – these dresses do exactly what you need them to do, they pull focus, accentuate, create drama.  Choosing to use older women, mothers, and fashion icons like Dita Von Teese doesn’t hurt either.

Fall/Winter 2015 Couture – Atelier Versace and Ulyana Sergeenko

Couture week kicked off on Sunday in Paris, with two notable showings by Donatella Versace and Ulyana Sergeenko.  Both highly stylized brands played up their strengths.  Coming back from a rather ludicrous showing last season of dresses with hashtags on them, Versace reminded us what this house is capable of.  The collection was almost whimsical in it’s delicateness – at least as delicate as Versace can be.  And Sergeenko, who’s known for her vintage inspired pieces, emphasized the bias cut shape and cat eye sunglasses the label has come to be known for.

Dita Von Teese by John Russo for Bazaar México and Latam, February 2015

Dita wows no matter what – in editorials, events, promotional photos, or just walking down the street, but there’s something so especially lovely about a really fantastic editorial. This shoot by John Russo captures Dita’s essense perfectly, and that shot of her in the aubergine gown is out of this world – it looks like her wedding gown! Dita is gothic royalty! Honour her!

Haute Couture Spring 2015 – Giambattista Valli, Stéphane Rolland, Alexis Mabille

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2015

It’s interesting that this collection looked more true to the vision of Christian Dior than Raf Simons’ couture collection this week.  Classic empire waist and big skirted lines mixed with beautifully soft colours, gorgeous ruffling, and dramatic capes and cloaks are perfect examples of what couture is supposed to be.  Putting all the girls in the matching bowed veils was a great thematic touch, making this collection look girlish and a touch vintage.

Seeing Rolland’s collections always makes me wish that Angelina Jolie would vary away from Versace for some of her event appearances, because each one of these pieces would look so perfect on her.  These innovative, dramatic looks are made for a woman with presence.  The designs are deceptively complex – appearing at first glance to be simple white or black pieces, but upon closer inspection, reveal masterful touches.

Alexis Mabille Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2015

This is Mabille’s 10th year of couture shows, and these bias cut, dramatic dresses show exactly why he’s earned his place amoungst fashion’s top artists.  Though not his best collection, it still showed his strengths – rich colours, impeccable cuts, and his ability to apply a modern sensibility to classic pieces.
