The first time I saw Elle Fanning was on an episode of Law and Order: SVU, when Mariska Hargitay was away on maternity leave and Connie Nielsen replaced her. Elle played a homicidal little crazy kid terrifying gorgeous Connie. She was like Samara-level crazy, or like that girl in that documentary who had to be kept separate from her brother because she had no emotions and would murder him. Oh man, that documentary is great! So is The Ring! What? Oh! So! Elle was amazing in that episode and I was like, “That scary little blonde girl is a superstar!” and she is! She has magnificent range, sincerity as far as the eye can see, and sometimes sinisterness as far as the eye can see. She’s also an amazing model, as evidenced in these recent editorials – an autumnal story by Billy Kidd for The Edit; a gender-skewering shoot by Collier Schorr for i-D; and a I’m a Grown Woman fashion shoot by Olivia Malone for Nylon. No matter the character Elle is playing, she owns it. And she has the most amazing smile in the whole world! She always looks like she’s being caught mid-delighted giggle.
